4 Tips for Securing Your Next Promotion

When you start a new job, with hard work and effort, promotions can come quickly. Many people leap through the ranks in the first few years with a company. Then, growth can stop. You can start to feel like you’ve hit the ceiling and there is nowhere left to go. If you’ve been stuck in the same position for a long time, you can start to feel unmotivated and unhappy; you may even consider looking elsewhere or changing careers completely.

If you do decide it’s time to move on, that’s fine. It’s never too late to try something different, and you should never feel trapped in a job that makes you unhappy. But, remember, the same could happen again. If you’ve always loved your job and you’re just feeling frustrated by a lack of progress, try to find ways to secure a promotion before thinking about moving on. Let’s take a look at how you can do it.

Smarten Up

We all start new jobs in our best suits, well groomed, standing tall offering a welcoming smile. This rarely lasts, especially if you’ve started to feel unsatisfied. Things start to slip. Take a good look at yourself, remembering that appearances matter. Are you well-groomed and smartly dressed every day? Do you smile when you greet people and go about your work with a smile on your face? How’s your posture? Standing tall can make a great impression. Then, look at your work. Is it well presented? Is there anything that you could do to tidy it up a little? A few small changes can get you noticed again if you’ve slipped into the background at work.

Get Back to Basics

Sometimes, when we are pushing for a promotion, we want to show that we can do the job that we want, and we stop giving the position that we’ve currently got our full focus. If this sounds familiar, go back to basics. Read your job description and make sure you are doing it to the best of your ability before tackling anything else.

Show Your Interest

One reason that people fail to get promotions is that their superiors aren’t aware they want it. If no direct promotion is currently available, apply for something higher. Even if you know there’s no chance you’ll get it; it makes your intentions clear. Another option is simply sitting down with your manager and telling them what you want and where you’d like to be. Ask for their help and advice.

Don’t Stand for Discrimination

Unfortunately, discrimination is still present in the workplace. If you are worried that you’re lack of development has anything to do with your race, gender, health or age, speak to someone about it. If your company has an HR department, they should be your first port of call.

Sometimes, it’s just about time. If you are doing all that you can, you’ve made your intentions clear, and your superiors are happy with your work, just keep going. Take your time and work hard, you’ll get there.
