One Team, One Direction

Your employees are your biggest assets. If you’ve launched your own business, it’s likely that you’ve come across this statement at some point during your readings and your entrepreneur network. For a lot of entrepreneurs, the team is synonymous with productivity – you can build a business without anybody to do the work, to put it in simple terms. As a result, it’s not uncommon for large production companies to perceive their team as an element of the machinery, which leads to a high team turnover rate and the potential loss of skills and talents. Companies that are built on repetitive chain tasks don’t value the importance of building a corporate consciousness. Companies that require a specific set of skills prefer to establish a strategy of staff retention, to bring the team together and follow one common direction. But how do you get your team to become your biggest business asset and to stay with you?

Working together

First of all, it’s essential to understand that there’s a big difference between a group of employees and a team. While a team is connected by the ability to work together and to maximize skills and talents within the company to achieve the best possible results, building a team requires a lot of work. That’s precisely why more and more companies prefer to invest in team building activities to ensure that skills, communication and collaboration become a natural part of everyday life in the workplace. If you’re still looking for an effective team building approach, forget about conferences and emailing inspirational articles to your employees: Organize a team building retreat where your staff can get to know each other and complete a variety of activities towards one single goal. However, keep one thing in mind. While people don’t mind team building, they will resent the activity if it’s done during the time they would have spent with their family. In short: Avoid weekends!

Looking after your team

Everyone on your team has different health requirements. Some people are naturally fit and strong, while others have a weak constitution. Additionally, if you work with a remote team, it’s likely that these health requirements will not be the same. Take for example the healthcare needs of someone in NYC and compare them against the ones of someone living in Thailand. While they might have the same skills and maybe similar lifestyle, it’s likely that they will come across different illnesses throughout the year. That’s precisely why you need to get a group medical insurance. When a standard health insurance isn’t fit for your company, you can work with a tailored group approach instead.

Improve those skills

Finally, no team is perfect. But it’s your role to identify weaknesses and offer the appropriate training to each member of your team. This will help your employees to become gradually stronger together and improve their overall performance. As a rule of the thumb, while your team might need some common training guides if you decide to bring new equipment or new strategies to the company, it’s best to create a personalized training plan to match the needs of each employee.

In short, teams are not natural. You need to build them, through team building events, healthcare offers and skill improvement strategies. Your team is your best asset, but only if you take care of your staff first!
