Working from home sounds great. You can get everything done within your own time frame and you’ll have all the comforts that you enjoy while at home. The advent of cloud computing means that more and more people are choosing to work remotely instead of in a traditional office environment. But this isn’t the full story. Working from home does come with a lot of benefits, but it also has its disadvantages. You need to consider these before you make your decision to move out of the office and into the home. Are you equipped to deal with these problems that come along with working at home?
When you work in an office with the same people everyday, you build a relationship with those people. This is important for a number of reasons. Knowing how people work and what their strengths and weaknesses are can help you to delegate work more effectively and put together teams that will work well together. It also creates a more harmonious and positive workplace which has been proven to increase productivity in a business.
When you are all working from home, you won’t have this close-knit team relationship. You will mostly be communicating through email and over the phone which makes it more difficult to get to know one another. This can be overcome if you make sure that you all meet in person at least once a year, and more often if possible.
Lack Of Expertise
If you ever have any problems in an office, there is usually somebody down the corridor that can help you out. It’ll only take a second to pop down and see them. When you are at home, however, the only expertise you have quick access to is your own. One of the main areas of concern is your IT systems. Most of us don’t have the skills to fix any tech issues ourselves so you’ll be in trouble if anything breaks. You need to make sure that you have IT support which offers remote services so they can fix any problems that you might have straightaway. Otherwise, you risk wasting a whole day waiting for somebody to come out and get things working again.
Lots of remote workers tend to view their work as a stopgap rather than a permanent position because it is something that they are doing from home. This means that people are less invested in the business and take less care when completing work. You aren’t in the office with them so there is less motivation for them to work hard.
Anybody that works from home will tell you that the biggest hurdle to overcome is motivation. It’s a lot more difficult to get into a working mindset when you are sat in the living room and you’re more likely to have regular coffee breaks when the kitchen is right there. One of the best ways to stay motivated is to create a separate space just for work. As soon as you go in there, treat it like you would a normal office, and set yourself strict working hours.
