How To Stay Safe During Construction

Working in construction is always a fun direction to take your career. If you’re a creative one of sorts and enjoy getting your hands stuck in, then this is the perfect industry to do that in. There is something very rewarding about seeing the finished piece that you and your team have worked on over a long period of time, as well as the overjoyed client who loves what you’ve done.

Having said that, it’s important that you understand that things aren’t always easy. It’s a job that requires you to be relatively fit and strong in order to complete all the necessary tasks. It can also be dangerous at times if you aren’t paying attention and having a bit of an off day – like we are all prone to.

Here are all the things you need to remember to avoid having an accident.

Lift things properly

When having to lift a heavy object, try and hold it as close to your waist as possible as this will take pressure away from your back. If you’re picking something off the floor, or lower down, bend from the knees as a pose to your back in a squat position. You don’t want to hunch yourself over as this is where injuries arise. If it feels too heavy as you start to lift – leave it and ask a stronger colleague if you can. It’s not worth taking the risk as hernias are never nice to get.

Pay attention

If you’re having a bad or off day – let someone know. This is to not only give you the mental support that you may need, but it’s also to keep you safe. By letting someone know, they will be able to keep an extra eye on you just to be on the safe side. When you’re going through something, this stops you from being able to focus and you find yourself distracted. You may only look away for a second, but that could be a life-changing disturbance.

Have the appropriate training

When you initially get the job, you should undergo training so that you know exactly what to do, and how to use tools and machinery correctly. This is so important because if you miss something, you may find yourself in a lot of trouble. Your boss should ensure that this is provided to you, but if you’ve started the job and haven’t received anything, don’t be afraid to point it out to whoever is in charge. Sometimes people need a little push in the right direction, especially if they’ve been too busy to notice you’re there.

Know who to contact

If you’re unfortunate enough to find yourself with an injury, then it is important that you get the right support and advice. You may have gotten hurt at the hand of someone else, be it another employee, or the fact that the machinery wasn’t working properly, to begin with. If these are the circumstances, then you have every right to build up a case.
