Coca-Cola’s 5by20 Initiative Is Empowering Female Entrepreneurs Across the Globe

“I received products from Coca-Cola’s 5by20 program; however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.”

With International Women’s Day fast approaching, and the Women’s Business Daily team actually being international when it arrives, we wanted to take a moment to highlight the day and a really amazing initiative that Coca-Cola has started to help empower female entrepreneurs worldwide with the tools and training they need to grow their businesses and income.

A majority of the women in the 5by20 initiative are living in developing nations and are using their resourcefulness and creativity to turn Coca-Cola packaging into beautiful décor items and accessories in order to elevate themselves, their families, and communities. These women are changing their lives and the lives of their family – despite not having access to the resources, skills, or opportunities that could allow you or I to provide for our families. It’s an unfortunate reality that many women around the world are constantly trying to overcome. They’re not looking for hand-out, just the chance to raise themselves out of poverty for more promising future.

This International Women’s Day, we wanted to highlight Coca-Cola for creating a program that provides access to skills training, financial resources and mentorship to women entrepreneurs across the globe. Coca-Cola’s 5by20 initiative is working to improve the life of one woman at a time until they’ve helped 5 million women by 2020. How awesome is that?

These women create beautiful products from upcycled packaging. Coca-Cola labels and pull tabs which are often discarded as waste are used to create beautiful products that these women are able to sell, and in turn, elevate themselves, their families, and their communities. There are many different artisans to choose from… Want to learn more about these women? Take a look at the video below.

So how can you help support this cause and empower women artisans in developing nations? Every day, we as consumers are faced with the choice of which companies we support with our income. By supporting companies who give back and support causes which need attention, we can make a difference.

There is no shortage of research which shows that when you invest in the education and success of women, it not only improves the economy, but also makes the community stronger and more sustainable. The 5by20 program is enabling women in more than 60 countries across the globe, and by the end of 2015, over 1.2 million women had been impacted through the program. So in honor of International Women’s Day, help create a ripple effect with us that can benefit our society as a whole and take a look at Coca-Cola’s 5by20 initiative.
